Question 1: Is It Making Money?
The board wants to know ROI. Not in six months. Not aspirationally. Right now. What value is this program delivering today? What will it deliver this year?
The answer should have three components: hard quantified return (what we know for sure), estimated return (what we believe with reasonable confidence), and deferred return (value that will materialize later).
Example answer: The credit risk model is delivering 18 million in avoided losses this year, based on prevented defaults we can track. We estimate an additional 8 million in improved pricing through better segmentation, based on comparison to control group. We expect 15 million in strategic value over the next two years through changed pricing strategy, but we are not counting that in current ROI.
That is the kind of answer that the board understands.
Question 2: Is It Safe?
The board is asking two sub-questions here. Is the model safe in the sense of operational reliability? And is it safe in the sense of governance and compliance?
Operational safety means: what are the failure modes? If the model produces wrong decisions, what is the financial impact? How do we detect failures? How do we respond? What is the incident history?
Governance safety means: is the model bias-checked? Is it compliant with regulations? Are we auditable? What happens if a regulator examines this program?
Example answer: The model has 99.2 percent uptime and has had one incident in the past six months where model drift caused performance degradation. We detected the drift within one hour and reverted to the previous model. No customer impact. We have implemented automated drift detection going forward. On governance, the model passes bias testing for gender and demographic parity across all outcomes. We maintain a complete audit trail. We have had zero compliance findings from internal audit.
Question 3: Are We Ready for This?
The board is asking about organizational maturity. Do we have the talent? Do we have the processes? Can we scale this? Will this break when we try to deploy it elsewhere?
This is about people, process, and infrastructure readiness. Not just technical readiness.
Example answer: We have the core data science and engineering talent, but we are at capacity. We are hiring two additional engineers to sustain current development. How Audit Committees Should Oversee AI Risk
The audit committee is a specific concern for AI governance. They care about risk, control, and compliance. Here is how they should approach AI oversight.
Audit committees should request quarterly reports on: (1) governance control effectiveness, (2) incident and near-miss log, (3) compliance findings, (4) vendor risk assessment, (5) data quality metrics. This is the AI-specific audit oversight framework.
The audit committee should also require that the enterprise demonstrate the ability to explain and justify model decisions. Not technically explain (show the code). Starting: The First Board Report
If you have never reported AI to the board before, start simple. Do not try to do all six sections at once. Do this:
Month 1: One-page executive summary with the six metrics and statement of program status. That is your first board report.

Month 3: Add a governance and risk section. Three pages.
